Kids Quads
Firstly we have kids quads. Started with the Suzuki LT50 and LT80 the market has now expanded with hundreds of different models of quad from China and Taiwan. Many of these quads are identical and there is a lot of badge engineering. You may find two quads which look identical, and are identical in all but 2 areas - the manufacturer's badge and the price. There is nothing to say that the more expensive version is higher quality than the same quad imported by a different company from the same production line. Most childrens quads are 40cc or 50cc or 80cc and are very low powered. For safety some manufacturers include either a cable kill tether which can be held by a parent or a remote control to stop the engine in an emergency.
Adult quad bikes
Entry level quads
Adult entry level quads start at 125cc and go up to around 350cc 4 stroke quads. You will find several competing brands in this sector. Not only the "big 4" - Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, but also as with children's quads a huge array of chinese and taiwanese brands. These quads are great for adult riders who have never ridden before, and are perfect for off-road use. They are also good as an introduction to road use. Many people consider them to be unsafe for road traffic as they are unable to keep up with fast moving traffic on dual carriageways Adult quads for experienced riders start at 400cc up to around 800cc. There are again many brands in this sector including Polaris, Can-am, KTM. Many people think that these quads are the most fun to own. High performance sports quads
Sport quads, typically 2 wheel drive (with some exceptions) and normally with manual gearboxes. These tend to be chain drive with sprockets and motorcycle style gearboxes. Buy New or Buy Used?

This might sound straight forward, but unless the current owner has a V5 for the quad, how do you know they are the legal owner?
Road Legal Quad or Off Road Quad
To be able to use any quad on the road it needs to be road legal. If you're using it on public land without vehicular access then the police may use their rights to confiscate your quad unless you are there with the permission of the land owner. If you are thinking of purchasing an off road quad to convert to road legal and increase its value, then it's very important to HPI check the vehicle. This can only be done over the phone with some companies as webchecks don't allow you to check against a chassis number
